Anti-homophobia and transphobia week

This week is anti-homophobia and transphobia week in Northern Ireland, and our Helpline staff have been joining a host of organisations and individuals to stand up and speak out against homophobia and transphobia. There is a full programme of events coordinated by Rainbow, HereNI and Cara-Friend, which you can check out here.

Northern Ireland Anti-Homophobia week is a unique opportunity for everyone to get involved in the campaign against intolerance and prejudice in Northern Ireland. Research shows that 2 in 5 lesbian, gay, bisexual people have been the victim of one or more homophobic incidents within the last three years ranging from verbal attacks, intimidation in their homes and serious physical assaults. Northern Ireland Anti-Homophobia Week and the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia on 17th May are an opportunity for us to stand together and speak with one voice against intolerance and prejudice. For more information on how you can get involved, get in touch with harriet@rainbow-project.org or check out Rainbow’s website.

Our Services for LGB&T people

Women’s Aid provides support to lesbian, bisexual and trans women who have been affected by domestic abuse and their children. Our 24 Hour Domestic & Sexual Violence Helpline is open to LGB&T women and men who have been affected by domestic or sexual violence or abuse. We know that within the LGBT community domestic abuse can often be hidden, and victims can feel isolated and worried that there is no one out there who will believe them or support them. We are here to listen to your story and provide the support you need.

Calling the 24 Hour Domestic & Sexual Violence Helpline to talk through your situation and the violence you are living with may help you to begin to make sense of your situation, and enable you to look at your options and discuss your safety. Our trained helpline workers are here to listen and look at what options are available to you. We can also provide emotional support, giving you the time you need to tell your story and provide you with practical information and signposting to other specialist organisations including housing advice, legal support, parenting advice, child contact issues and men’s health organisations and specific LGBT services within Northern Ireland.

To get in touch with the 24 Hour Domestic & Sexual Violence Helpline, call 0808 802 1414, email 24hrsupport@dvhelpline.org or text support to 07797 805839.
